01 · Overview

Medical Helpers Club was founded to make nursing home volunteering more accessible and, more importantly, more meaningful. After noticing that many local nursing homes struggled to recruit consistent volunteers following COVID, the club was created to reduce the barriers preventing students from getting involved while encouraging long-term relationships with residents instead of one-time visits.

Today, the organization has grown to over 150 members, partners with three local nursing homes, and has facilitated more than 1,500 volunteer hours. Through weekly activities ranging from bingo and karaoke to simple conversations, the club focuses on bringing companionship and consistency to residents while introducing students to the value of service.

02 · The Problem

When I first began volunteering, I noticed a pattern. Many residents told me they rarely saw the same volunteers twice. Students often came to fulfill service requirements before moving on, leaving little opportunity for genuine relationships to form.

The challenge wasn't simply a lack of volunteers. It was a lack of continuity.

03 · The Solution

Medical Helpers Club was built to create a more sustainable model for volunteering. Rather than organizing isolated service events, the club worked directly with nursing home staff to coordinate recurring volunteer opportunities, making it easier for students to get involved while encouraging them to return and spend time with the same residents.

By reducing the logistical barriers to volunteering and emphasizing consistency over one-time service, the club transformed volunteering from a requirement into a community.

04 · Impact

  • 150+ student members
  • 3 nursing home partnerships
  • 1,500+ volunteer hours facilitated
  • Weekly volunteer opportunities throughout the school year
  • Hundreds of meaningful interactions between students and senior residents

While these numbers demonstrate the club's growth, the greatest impact has been the relationships formed between generations and the sense of community built through consistent service.

05 · Reflection

Medical Helpers Club taught me that meaningful service is rarely the result of a single event. Lasting impact comes from showing up consistently, listening, and investing in relationships over time.

Building the organization reinforced an idea that continues to shape the way I approach leadership: identify a problem, lower the barriers preventing people from helping, and create systems that make doing good easier for everyone.
